Welcome to NoLibs Green, an initiative by the Northern Liberties Business Owners Association and Solaris Energy. We hope to have 100% participation in this program from the business community here in northern liberties.
The word ‘green’ has been thrown around a lot lately. As a media buzzword, it can mean all natural, organic, chemical free, CFC free, VOC free, refrigerant free, acid free, CO2 neutral, renewable, recyclable, biodegradable, or even local. As one of these ‘green experts’, I get asked at least once daily what ‘green’ really means to me.
Every day, I am asked what it is to green up their lives. Is there something I can buy? Sure. Will recycling help? Of course.
So, for the record, here it is-
When a man walks into the doctor and says, “I’m having heart problems.” ,
The doctor will first ask about the patient’s lifestyle, then prescribe a course of treatment that includes some form of behavior modification.
In these days of 5 dollar heating oil and $4.25 gasoline, the metaphor
works well.
To me, being ecologically or environmentally responsible means to be responsible for the resources at your disposal. Use energy wisely. Be mindful about water resources. Don’t just recycle, buy less. Vote for clean energy and air legislation. Don’t buy fruits and vegetables out of season. Take public transportation. Buy a lunchbox. Promote neighborhood business. Hire a neighborhood kid. Insulate your home. Use CFL’s. The list goes on.
Ultimately, being ‘green’ is about changing our behavior.
It’s about rethinking the way we live our lives, from when and how we work, what we eat, when we do our laundry, or our routines when waking up in the morning. It is about the way we build, what we build, and the materials that we choose in that process. It is even about the way we shop, dine, and play.
